If you’re thinking about straightening your teeth, you’ve probably wondered whether clear aligners or traditional braces are the better choice. Both can give excellent results. The right one depends on your teeth, your lifestyle and what matters most to you.

How each option works

Invisalign® uses a series of clear, removable aligners made specifically for your teeth. Each set is worn for around a week or two before you move on to the next, gradually guiding your teeth into position.

Traditional braces use brackets fixed to your teeth, joined by a wire that is adjusted at regular appointments. They are on your teeth all the time, working continuously.

Appearance and comfort

Clear aligners are very discreet, which is the main reason many adults choose them. They have no brackets or wires to catch on your lips and cheeks, although new aligners can feel tight for the first day or two.

Fixed braces are more noticeable, and brackets can rub until you get used to them. Orthodontic wax helps, and most people adjust within a couple of weeks.

Eating, drinking and cleaning

Because aligners come out, you can eat what you like and brush and floss as normal. You do need to take them out for meals and hot drinks, and wear them for around 20 to 22 hours a day for them to work.

With fixed braces, certain foods such as sticky sweets and hard crusts are best avoided, and cleaning around brackets takes more time and care.

How long does treatment take?

Treatment time varies from person to person, from a few months for minor adjustments to a year or two for more complex cases. Your dentist can give you a realistic estimate after assessing your teeth.

Good to know: with either option you’ll need to wear retainers afterwards to keep your teeth where they are. Skipping them is the most common reason teeth drift back.

Which is right for you?

  • Aligners often suit adults and teens who are responsible about wearing them, want a discreet option and have mild to moderate alignment concerns.
  • Fixed braces can be better for more complex movements, or where you’d find it hard to commit to wearing aligners for most of the day.
  • Either way, a healthy mouth comes first. Any gum disease or decay needs to be treated before starting.

Taking the next step

The simplest way to find out is to book a consultation. We’ll look at your teeth, talk through your goals and explain which options are suitable, with no pressure to decide on the day.
