A brighter smile is one of the most popular reasons people visit us. Professional whitening is safe, predictable and tailored to you, but it helps to know what to expect before you start.

How professional whitening works

Whitening gels contain peroxide, which breaks down the stains held within the surface of your teeth. In the UK, only a registered dental professional can legally supply gels at the strength needed for a noticeable result, which is one reason shop-bought kits rarely compare.

Before starting, we check your teeth and gums are healthy. Whitening won’t work well over decay or gum problems, and those should be treated first.

What happens during treatment

  1. We assess your teeth and agree the shade you’re aiming for.
  2. We take impressions or scans so custom trays can be made for you.
  3. You’re shown how to use the gel safely, usually for a set period each day.
  4. We review your progress and stop when you’re happy with the shade.

What about sensitivity?

Some patients notice temporary sensitivity or mild gum irritation during whitening. It usually settles within a day or two of finishing. If it happens, let us know. We can adjust how often you wear the gel or recommend a desensitising toothpaste.

Things worth knowing

  • Whitening only works on natural teeth. Crowns, veneers and fillings won’t change colour, so it’s best to plan before any cosmetic work.
  • Results vary. Teeth that are yellow-toned usually respond better than those with grey tones.
  • It isn’t permanent. The effect fades gradually, and how quickly depends on your habits.

Making your results last

Tea, coffee, red wine and smoking are the main culprits for new staining. You don’t have to give them up, but rinsing with water afterwards, using a straw for cold drinks and keeping up regular hygiene visits all help.

Clifton tip: keep your trays. A short top-up every so often is usually all it takes to refresh your shade.
