Why Hygiene Appointments Matter as Much as Check-Ups

What a professional clean removes that brushing can’t, and how it protects your gums for the long term.

Many people brush well and still wonder why they need to see the hygienist. The answer is that some things simply can’t be removed at home, and left alone they can cause problems you can’t see.

Plaque, tartar and your gums

Plaque is the soft, sticky film that builds up on teeth every day. If it isn’t removed thoroughly, it hardens into tartar (calculus), which you can’t brush away. Tartar irritates the gums and can lead to gum disease.

Why gum disease matters

Early gum disease (gingivitis) often shows as bleeding when you brush and is reversible. If it progresses, it can damage the bone that supports your teeth. Gum disease has also been linked to wider health conditions such as diabetes, which is another reason to catch it early.

What happens at a hygiene visit

  1. We check your gums and measure any pockets around your teeth.
  2. Plaque and tartar are gently removed from above and below the gum line.
  3. Your teeth are polished to lift surface staining.
  4. You get personalised advice on brushing and cleaning between your teeth.

Most people find it comfortable. If your gums are tender, tell us and we’ll adjust how we work.

How often do you need one?

It depends on your gum health, how quickly tartar builds up and your risk factors. Some patients come every three months, others every six or twelve. We’ll recommend what suits you and review it as things change.

Benefits beyond clean teeth

  • Fresher breath, as the bacteria that cause odour are removed.
  • Brighter teeth, from lifting everyday staining.
  • Early warning of problems that may need attention.
  • Support for treatment, such as implants, Invisalign® and bonding.

Clifton tip: if your gums bleed when you brush, don’t stop. Keep brushing gently and book a hygiene visit. Bleeding is usually a sign that your gums need attention.

Book yours
