Talking through an implant plan at Clifton Dental, Newtown.

Dental implants are a long-term way to replace missing teeth. They look, feel and work much like natural teeth, but the process can seem daunting if you’ve not done it before. Here’s a clear, step-by-step guide.

What is a dental implant?

An implant is a small titanium post placed in your jawbone, where it acts as an artificial tooth root. Once it has fused with the bone, a crown, bridge or denture is attached to it.

Step 1: Consultation and planning

We’ll talk through your goals and medical history, examine your mouth and take X-rays or 3D scans to check the amount and quality of bone available. This is also the time to ask questions and discuss costs, so you know exactly what to expect.

Step 2: Placing the implant

The implant is placed under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn’t feel pain during the procedure. Most patients describe it as less uncomfortable than they expected. Afterwards you may have some swelling and tenderness, which usually settles within a few days.

Step 3: Healing

Over the following months, the implant gradually bonds with the bone. This healing time varies from person to person, and we’ll review your progress along the way. You’ll be given clear aftercare instructions.

Step 4: Fitting the final crown

Once the implant is secure, we take impressions or scans and make your crown, matched to the shape and shade of your natural teeth. It’s then attached and checked to make sure your bite feels comfortable.

Are implants right for you?

  • Healthy gums matter. Gum disease needs to be treated first.
  • You need enough bone. If not, a bone graft may sometimes be an option.
  • Smoking and some health conditions can affect healing, so we’ll discuss these honestly with you.

Looking after your implant

Implants can’t decay, but the gums around them can still become inflamed. Brushing, cleaning between your teeth and regular hygiene visits are the best way to help your implant last.
